Travel Nurse Spotlight: Jim Yates – 33 Years of Passionate Nursing and Travel Healthcare
Jim Yates has been a registered nurse for over 33 years, a career that has spanned various specialties and experiences. From the fast-paced environment of trauma surgical ICUs to the chaotic world of emergency rooms, Jim’s career has been shaped by a deep passion for helping others and a continuous desire to learn and grow. In this travel nurse spotlight, Jim reflects on his journey, including his experiences as a travel nurse, and shares what has kept him motivated throughout his career.
Jim’s story began long before he became an RN. “I started out running on the local ambulance,” he recalls. It was during this time that Jim discovered his calling to healthcare. The adrenaline, the challenges, and most importantly, the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives was something that hooked him from the start. This led him to nursing school, where he could turn his passion into a career.
His first job as an RN was in trauma surgical ICU, a role that demanded both skill and composure in high-stress situations. Over time, Jim found himself gravitating toward the Emergency Room, where the action never stopped. “They kept pulling me there,” he admits. “And I went to the dark side,” he jokes, referring to the excitement and unpredictability of the ER.
Taking the Leap into Travel Healthcare
Jim’s decision to move into travel healthcare was a pivotal moment in his career. It wasn’t just a career shift—it was a lifeline. “I went to travel nursing when it was a great way to escape an abusive boss and triple my income,” Jim explains. For many nurses, travel nursing is an escape from the rigid structure of traditional nursing roles. For Jim, it also offered something invaluable: freedom.
The flexibility in scheduling was another significant factor. “No more holidays, and I didn’t get denied vacation requests year after year,” Jim says. Travel nursing gave him control over his time and his life—something that had been missing in his previous roles.
Being a part of the ARMS family
Jim has been with ARMS Staffing for five or six years, and in that time, he’s formed a deep connection with the team. “Hope Bender and Jessica Leckrone have treated me very well. Two of my favorite people to work with,” Jim shares. The support he’s received from Hope and Jessica has made all the difference, and he knows he’s not just a number at ARMS. “They always do more and try harder,” he says, a sentiment that sets ARMS apart from other agencies he’s worked with.
Having experienced the shortcomings of larger agencies, Jim is quick to point out the personal touch that ARMS offers. “The big agencies just don’t care about you,” he says. “Hope and Jessica would never leave me stranded or in trouble.” For Jim, that reliability and trust are irreplaceable.
Advice for New Travel Nurses
For new nurses considering the travel nursing route, Jim has some advice that comes from years of hands-on experience. “You must understand that we are never done learning, no matter how many years we have in,” he says. The healthcare landscape is constantly evolving, and no nurse, no matter how experienced, can afford to stop growing.
Jim encourages new travel nurses to embrace the chance to see new methods and practices. “Be willing to see new methods and carry the good ones away with you,” he advises. Travel nursing exposes you to different ways of doing things—take those lessons with you and use them to improve your practice wherever you go.
And perhaps most importantly, Jim reminds new nurses that they will encounter challenges. “You are going to see some things!” But that’s part of the journey, and it’s those experiences that shape a nurse into a better healthcare provider.
What’s next for Jim?
Looking ahead, Jim has big plans. He hopes to continue his work as a travel nurse but also aims to contribute to causes that are close to his heart. “I hope to help on volunteer medical missions for nonprofit organizations—Amazon, Eastern Europe, aboard a hospital ship,” he says. Jim’s desire to give back is a testament to his deep sense of service and compassion, and it’s clear that he’s not planning to retire any time soon.
“I’ll go on working as long as I can! No retirement for me,” Jim laughs. His commitment to caring for others and his drive to make a difference are as strong as ever, and that’s exactly what makes Jim Yates the kind of nurse who inspires those around him.
Jim’s career has been shaped by his love for the profession and his drive to make a meaningful impact. With the support of ARMStaffing and a passion for lifelong learning, Jim remains a vital part of the nursing community. And as he looks toward future medical missions, one thing is clear: Jim’s journey is far from over.
Thank you, Jim, for being a source of inspiration to us all! We’re proud to have you as part of the ARMStaffing family.
